TOPICAL COLD SORE TREATMENT

Medication:

This medication may contain any or all of the following: Acyclovir, Benzocaine, Triamcinolone, Hydrocortisone and PABA (sunblock).

Use:

This compounded medication is used to treat cold sores.

Possible Side Effects:

This medication may cause a warm to burning sensation to the area(s) it is applied. This sensation is normal and should subside.

Precautions:

This medication should be applied only to affected area(s)-not spread on like lipstick. Care should be taken to protect eyes. Keep out of the reach of children. This medication should be protected from heat-it will melt. Do not use if known allergy to any of the components.

Directions:

Dab on affected area(s) every 2 to 3 hours while awake for a week. Protect from heat. Apply ONLY to affected spots. Proper use should result in better outcome. One advantage of this medication is that it may include several different ways to treat the infection (anti-viral, anesthetic, inflammation) that is not commercially available. Another advantage is the "social stigma" of pulling an anti-viral tube out to reapply medication - this looks like a "chapstick" that way nobody thinks twice about a reapplication.

Cost:

The cost varies due to individualized patient drug therapy.
