Narcotic Analgesics
Medication: This compounded prescription may contain one of the following: morphine, methadone, hydromorphone, fentanyl, meperidine, levorphanol, oxymorphone, codeine, hydrocodone, ketamine, or propoxyphene.
Use: This medication is used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain.
Side Effects: This medication may cause constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea, and flushing the first few days as the patient's body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become bothersome, patients should contact their physician.
Precautions: Patients should contact their physician if they develop breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, anxiety or tremors while taking this medication. Patients should not drive or operate machinery while taking this medication. Patients should make sure their physician and pharmacist are aware of any other medications they are currently taking, including any over-the-counter medications.
Directions: Pain medications work best in preventing pain before it occurs. Once the pain becomes intense, the medication is not as effective in relieving it. Patients should take this medication with food or milk to avoid stomach upset. Patients should always follow their physician's or pharmacist's instructions. Patients should not exceed the dosage prescribed by the physician. This medication should be stored as directed by the pharmacist.
Medications are available in high dose sustained released capsules, suppositories and topical creams and gels. Consult with compounding pharmacist for dosing information.
