Patient Drug Education
Nicotine Lollipops for Smoking Cessation
Numerous nicotine-containing dosage forms- such as gum, patches, nasal spray, and inhalers have all been proposed as aids to smoking cessation. Another replacement device is a nicotine lollipop.
The lollipops contain Nicotine Salicylate, a natural sweetener and flavorings in a sugar free base. They are intended to help smokers quit their tobacco habit by suppressing symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. A major part of "quitting" is psychological, and the lollipops address both the hand-to-mouth fixation as well as the nicotine addiction. The lollipop is available by prescription only, and contains a prescribed amount of nicotine (2mg, 4mg or 6 mg) to gradually wean smokers off the drug over a period of several weeks. Currently we have eight flavors, strawberry, watermelon, raspberry, cherry, lemon-lime, grape, butterscotch and spearmint. The individual may control the amount of nicotine based on the body's needs. When a nicotine urge strikes, the patient places the lollipop in the mouth until the urge passes, then replaces the lollipop in its container until needed again. In contrast, doses of nicotine in the gum may be too large for some patients, and continuous nicotine delivery provided by patches may be undesirable. Many patients report that they do not like the taste of the gum, and inhalers irritate the throat.
The lollipop mimics more closely the nicotine exposure that an individual receives while smoking a cigarette--- one does not smoke all the time.
Unlike cigarette tars that contain dozens of cancer causing chemicals, nicotine is not a carcinogen; and people who use nicotine replacement products do not inhale carbon monoxide. Those who wish to "kick the habit" and use a form of nicotine replacement increase their chances of quitting from about 5% to 10-20%. Those who are highly motivated and use nicotine replacement preparations in conjunction with supportive counseling raise the success rate to about 30%.
Tobacco smoking now accounts for more than 430,000 deaths a year in the United States alone. Since 70% of smokers visit their primary care physician each year, these physicians are in a unique position encourage their patients to quit. While physicians can have a significant influence on smoking behavior, less than 50% of patients have received any advice on smoking cessation.
How to Use Place the lollipop in the mouth when you feel the urge to smoke. Leave it there until the urge is over. Once the urge passes, place the lollipop in the container provided and reuse the next time the .urge strikes. One lollipop usually lasts 4 to 5 cigarette breaks. |
